Music Theory

Playing an instrument is a pleasure. Understanding it is a superpower. Every composer behind your favorite songs and soundtracks — from John Williams to Taylor Swift — mastered music theory first. It's the language beneath the music. When students understand the rules, they begin to see patterns everywhere — and that's when learning accelerates, creativity awakens, and the ability to compose their own music becomes real!

Our Semi-Private Classes: More Focus, Better Results

At Symphony 9 School, our semi-private music theory classes take students from foundational note reading and rhythm all the way through chord progressions, complex arrangements, and advanced aural training — from beginner level through the highest exam grades. Each class is carefully selected with similar age and level for students to maximize results and also joy.

Why Music Theory?

For beginners: Theory is the missing piece that makes everything click faster. Understanding notes, rhythm, and timing helps beginners learn their instrument more quickly, build confidence sooner, and develop good habits from the start. Think of it as learning the alphabet before writing a story — the instrument is the voice, theory is the language.

For exams: Music theory is a required component of every major certification exam worldwide — ABRSM, RCM, Certificate of Merit, and more. No matter which exam path your child pursues, a strong theory foundation is non-negotiable. At Symphony 9, it's built in from day one.

For creativity: When students truly understand the rules behind music, learning accelerates and creativity follows. They begin to compose, arrange, and express their own musical voice. Theory is what transforms a student who plays music into a musician who creates it.

For community: Music is meant to be shared. Students in group settings listen more carefully, stay more motivated, and simply enjoy learning more. Our small semi-private classes strike the perfect balance — personal enough for individual attention, social enough to make every session something students look forward to.
